Water is the ultimate resource for life, and in Texas, it’s precious and safeguarded. It just doesn’t flow freely into your home from an unlimited source. It may seem that way because of the abundance of water we actually have on Earth, but it is a much more complex process when it comes to getting water to flow through your tap.

Texas is among several other states in the US that use regional water suppliers to help keep the water running to the homes of the people who live there.

Because natural water resources are scarce, there are high chances for drought, and with the rapidly increasing population, these supplies are critical assets for the state.

What Do Regional Water Suppliers Do?

Since Texas relies heavily on its water reservoirs (man-made lakes), it is the job of regional water suppliers like the North Texas Municipal Water District and the Upper Trinity Regional Water District to treat, manage, provide, and plan the water supplied to the residents of those areas.

A main task of the suppliers is to ensure that there is an adequate water supply for years and years, even with the growth in population and weather patterns.

They also manage the process and treatment of the water, which includes following regulations set forth by the EPA and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

How Do Regional Suppliers Differ From City Water Management

Suppliers handle the long-term plans, the management of reservoirs, and the process of treating the water. They don’t work with individuals; they work with the cities and sell them the water wholesale.

The city utility businesses purchase the water (it is still kept in lakes/reservoirs) and then work directly with the residents of their communities to get the water into their homes. The residents pay their water bills to the city utility companies.

The city utility businesses are in charge of the water quality within their local distribution area, the storage tanks, pipes, and meters, and handling the residential customer-facing side of the water supply system.

How Water Gets Into Your Home

Truth be told, depending on where you live and how big your city is, the water that flows into your home can take up to a hundred miles to get there from the source of the reservoir.

This means that even though it has been treated and maintained to the standards set forth by the regulating agencies, it more than likely picked up a few hitchhiking contaminants along the way (see our previous blogs about PFAs and contaminants in water).

That’s why it’s also crucial to have a water system in your home that filters and purifies it every time you turn on a faucet, run your washing machine, or take a shower.
